If you want a recomendation for the best carpet cleaner in town. I would call American Carpet Cleaners at 847-6952. They did my carpets which turned out like brand new, got all the stains removed and was very reasonable in price. Under $200.
Hope this helps

Wow! I had forgotten about this post. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll keep them in mind for the once or twice yearly cleaning.
In between deep cleanings I’d like to find an actual carpet cleaning machine. Any suggestions?

Wow! I have the same question that you’re asking. Just never got around to asking it. I have area carpet and I don’t want to call anyone out to clean it. Hopefully someone can help the both of us.
I have a Hoover steam cleaner. We love it! I bought it a few months ago and have done all the carpets in my house. It did a great job-even with the older stains that had been around a while.
I have a bissel with a built in heater I got it at walmart for 160 6 months ago and it works great. I hardly ever have it because so many people borrow it from me
we have a hoover steam vac. i think it works really well. it got pretty high ratings from consumer reports, back when we got it. i’ve also borrowed my brothers bissell pro heat cleaner. it doesn’t clean nearly as well as the hoover.
I like our Hoover Steam Vac. It’s about 10yrs old and works on carpets and hard floors. I don’t remember what we paid for it, but we got it at Kohl’s when it was on sale and we had a % off coupon on top of that.
Thanks for all the replies. This information is EXTREMELY helpful. I’ll definitely use your comments when I consider which cleaner to purchase.
Right now, it looks like the Hoover Steam Vac is the forum favorite.

Thanks clueless mommy for this thread. It’s helpful to me also. I will start looking out for one, “on sale”.
If you’re looking for something to get out every day stains and spills, we have the Bissell SpotBot and we LOVE it. It gets out everything. Every time our cats throw up, it comes right up. It even got stains out of the carpet from the previous owner of our house when we moved in! I think we got ours at Target for about $117. It’s very small so it stores easily and it is super easy to use (no pushing, just set it on the stain and hit start and it does all the work for you!). If you’re looking for something to clean your entire carpet every week or whatever then this is not probably what you need, but if you want something to just clean spills and spots then this is a great alternative to a big steam vac. It also does wonders on stairs and couches.

I’ve got a hankering to purchase my owner carpet cleaner/steamer. About two weeks ago, I had the entire first floor, basement and stairs professionally cleaned … guess what, can’t tell it … especially in the family room.
It seems like there’s a new spot to clean everyday, and I’m tired of calling Stanley Steemer. So, I figure over the long haul, I can save money by doing the work myself and leaving the deep cleaning for once or twice per year.
I need your suggestions for models that work well. I’d like to keep my cost under $200.
