We on IndyMoms come from and have so many different backgrounds and experiences. I am prone to offending others on here, despite my intention not to! I personally am offended by very little, but I’ll share a couple:

Racial remarks, someone personally attacking my appearance (not fashion, genetics)or insulting my intelligence. Those are a few that came to mind. I’ll add more as I think of them…

For my benefit and just out of sheer curiosity, I’m wondering what everyone finds most offensive?

Yes, taking the Lord’s name in vain is an irritation to me.

The use of the F-word.

People who make assumptions about me.

I’m sensitive, and I get offended easily. As a teacher, I was offended when parents did not respect me. I learned to handle parents who disagreed with me and my opinions about their child’s abilities. But, I drew the line at anyone who disrespected me. I had a very low tolerance for parents who could send their children to me all day, yet did not have the decency to handle issues in a civil manner.

I’m also easily offended with friends. If I don’t think they handle an issue in a respectful way, I have a very difficult time letting it go. I’ve always envied people who just let things roll off their backs. But, that is so not me, and I will never be like that.

I can’t pinpoint anything specific that offends me. I’m pretty hard to offend. It’s interesting that people think they will offend me with certain things though and will appologize in advance. My lifelong best friend who knows me inside and out and knows I’m not one easily offended still does it. “T, I’m sorry if this offends you but….” insert whatever thing. If something offended me for real, I’d let someone know, if they were talking to me or around me. If I just see or hear something that is potentially offensive, I don’t do anything, perhaps look away or turn the radio station or whatever. I really don’t know. It’s been a long time since I was truly offended, I don’t even remember what it feels like.

Some things upset me, some things make me nervous. I know how that feels and how to react to that, just not to being offended.

additionally: I do try very hard to not offend others. I never want to upset or offend anyone, anytime. I’m incredibly appologetic. I try fairly hard to watch what I say and do so as not to upset others.

Great post. Totally agree.

Also, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that what others think and say is much more a reflection of their character than it is about the person or issue they’re addressing. Remembering that helps things slide off my back a lot more easily! ;-)
