I say get one. We got one probably a couple months ago. I have her litter box in the garage, and right away she would let me know when she has to go out to potty. Instantly she started going to the garage door when she wants out. Maybe I got lucky. I didn’t want the smell of one in my house or around kids, so I like it in the garage. The cat stays in the house and goes to garage to potty in litter box. My kids love it. My soon to be 3 yr old opens the door to let her out or back in. Just clean and have her take med if she isn’t already. I don’t think she will stay away from grandchild because of cat.

Somehow I doubt she’d prefer the pot-bellied pig. LOL

I am very allergic to cats and I very rarely visit family/friends who are cat owners. It is fine at first but about 15 min later the whole not being able to breathe, tight chest, itchy throat, watery eyes and sneezing thing really sucks!!! Just think really hard before you get one. I would hate for your children to see their Granny less because of a cat :) Good luck!
Most people are allergic to the dander from the cat hair. I saw some hairless cats 2 weekends ago and they were absolutely adorable- besides being really warm snuggle bugs. The breed is called Sphynx or Candadian Hairless. Here is a picture of one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphynx_(cat)
If I didn’t already have 3 cats in my house I would have gotten one of the 2 7-month old kittens they had there.

There you go! Get a little Mr. Bigglesworth! : )
Do what my MIL did-get one anyway. Dh is deathly allergic to dogs. MIL went out and got one. I don’t know what to tell you about the cat. You all know how I feel about MY cats. I would have to choose them over most people. If you do get one, make sure you post a pic!

Ditto to Alyssia30. I am also very allergic to cats and it’s no fun to go to someone’s house who has a cat. Sure, I could take allergy medication to visit these friends but there are side effects to the medicines that aren’t pleasant either, like drowsiness and irritibility and the medicines don’t completely take away my allergy symptoms. They just lessen the symptoms. If you don’t have an allergy, it’s hard to understand just how unpleasant the suffering can be. I also recommend thinking hard about cat vs. grandma.

I want a cat and I have been begging and begging my uber reluctant cat-hating husband for one. Last night, DS informed me that the cat that he has at his dad’s house is pregnant and asked if we would like a kitten. Much to my surprise, DH said YES! Woo Hoo! Only one problem…
My MIL is viciously allergic to cats. This is usually remedied by taking Alavert or Claritan. She was at our house yesterday and overheard mine and DS’s conversation about the kitten. After our discussion, MIL said that if we got a cat, she would rarely be able to babysit or come to visit. :( Oddly enough, I really like my MIL and don’t want to run her off, but I REALLY want a tittytat!
What to do, what to do? :(
